Herbal Medicine

A new horse on the yard has brought a respiritory virus with it (probably Equine Herpesvirus with the symptoms.) My two year old has already caught it but I would like to know at what levels it is safe to feed herbs such as ginseng and echinacea in an attemp to boost my seven year old trakener mares immune system so that she doesnt get it so badly. She is sixteen hands and approximately 540 kg. She has tied up in the past and and comes into season very badly. I do not know a holistic vet so any advice would be appreciated.

Steve Russell from Equine Health and Herbal replies.

Take each of the problems seperately and one stage at a time.

Firstly, a boost to the immune system should help in keeping disease at bay by increasing antibodies, white blood cells etc. Echinacea is the plant to use.

Probably the most researched herb, it is now widely accepted as playing a significant part in stimulating the immune system and helping to maintain good health. If given on a maintenance dose level it also acts as a preventative.

A course of Echinacea could well sort out most of the problems with this mare. If 'tying up' persists and there is a problem with oestrus [they could be linked], a course of chaste berry [vitex agnus-castus] will almost certainly help. It is only in the latter months that this plant has been proved to have significant beneficial effects on mares even with older mares suffering from Cushings.

I would recommend that this mare should be on a course of ImmuBoost first, and if the problems persist as described above, then a course of Hormonise. Both are available from most retailers.
