Tongue over Bit!

Dawn wrote to us with the following query:

Please help!

My names Dawn and Ilive in Warwickshire, I have recently purchased an eight year old Thoroughbred who's only vice is, when being schooled or hacked he tends to put his tongue over the bit. I sent him away for schooling and he came back in a Cambridge mouthpiece due to this problem and to help manner him, but he managed to still put his tongue over. Its now time to put him back in to his original bit which is a k.k because he is so soft mouthed and because I want to do dressage I don't want his mouth to harden, its hindering me going out on hacks now because he finds it so easy to put his tongue over with the k.k bit, what can I do please advise me.

Ken Perrin from the Sale or Return BitBank gives his reply.

Hi Dawn

Thanks for your enquiry.
A couple of questions I would ask is:
Does he have a flash noseband on? and
2, does he have a martingale?.

The most important aspect to address, is one of teeth, as I feel your horse has something wrong in his mouth that is making him put his tongue over the bit. Try a BEVA qualified Dentist who will offer a superb treatment.

The reason I asked about the flash is that if a horse is putting his tongue over the bit, the usual answer is to strap it down with a flash. This only masks the problem it does not solve it.

The KK bit sounds fine, but is it a thick bit. Sometimes thick or hollowmouth bits do not leave enough room in the horses mouth for it's tongue. So, if you have a thick / Hollowmouth bit in, try a thinner one.

Again, if the KK is single jointed, try the KK ULTRA, or alternatively, try a Kangaroo bit by John Dewsbury.

Dawn, it is very difficult to answer fully by e mail, so if you need to discuss further, please ring me on (01933) 277515

Kind Regards, Ken Perrin.
