Stiffness
in Horses Shoulder
Jennie
wrote to us with the following query:
I
Have a 15 year old cob who has gone really stiff in her
sholders. I was wondering if there is a feed supplment that
might help her.
Hermione

reply.
Hi Jennie
It sounds
like your cob is probably developing arthritis, but if you
have not done so already it would be worth getting her checked
over by your vet and farrier to make sure that the source
of the problem is her shoulders.
There
are a lot of different supplements on the market for joint
problems and choosing the right one can look a rather daunting
task! However, for a 15 year old, hopefully any wear and
tear to the cartilage will only be in the early stages,
so it is important to choose a product that will help support
her joints in the future.
Products
that contain glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate will probably
be the most beneficial to your mare. These ingredients are
naturally found in joints, and extensive research, particularly
in human medicine, has shown them to be highly beneficial
to cartilage and joint fluid. These products should be fed
on a long term basis to aid in the repair and prevention
of further damage to the joints.
NAF
Superflex combines glucosamine and chondroitin with
MSM. MSM (methyl-sulphonyl-methane) is organic sulphur and
is used to support inflammatory conditions and aid in the
repair of soft tissue. Also included in this formula are
natural anti-oxidants, essential for the removal of damaging
free radicals which build up in areas of the body that are
under stress.
After
a few weeks of feeding a joint supplement to your mare,
you should see a visible improvement in her mobility, and
hopefully you will have many more years of fun with her!
