Magnotherapy - How can it help?

Like many alternative remedies, the idea of magnetic therapy is not new, in fact the Chinese recognised the healing power of magnets over a thousand years ago in that they would carry a naturally magnetic rock - a lodestone - around their necks, as they felt that this healed various human conditions.

Nowadays, magnotherapy can be used to alleviate pain caused by all sorts of conditions occurring in people and animals, and has been refined to the use of a simple wristband for people, a collar for dogs and brushing boots for horses, the magnet being placed over a pulse point. Although there is no scientific evidence to support this, around 90% of people who have used magnotherapy products report that they have had some relief from pain including, arthritis, back pain, migraine and many other painful ailments. Magnotherapy has proved to be equally successful in the treatment of animals, with owners reporting a considerable improvement in their animals after using magnetic therapy.

Although it is not fully understood how magnotherpay works, it is generally thought that the magnetic field generated causes increased molecular agitation within the blood, thus improving the bloodsteam's ability to carry oxygen to the parts of the body where it is needed and therefore accelerating repair. Harmful toxins are also more speedily removed when the amount of oxygen is increased and it is thought that the blood circulation is generally improved.

Mrs Craig of Prestatyn thought she would have to retire her 26 year old, arthritic horse, Charlie, but after trying a pair of magnotherapy boots he developed a new lease of life and now enjoys riding out with other horses, and is able to keeps up with younger ones.

Another horse whose promising show career was threatened after he was savaged by dogs, has been given a new lease of life by a pair of magnetic boots.

Bitten through his hocks, his legs became badly infected and vets said the only cure for the sensitive thoroughbread was six to nine months complete rest. Initially extremely sceptical, the his owners put magnotherapy boots on the horse at the beginning of September and noticed the swelling go down within a week, while he also appeared a lot happier. Just William started working at the beginning of Ocotber and he won his first show jumping cup just four weeks later.

It's not a cure as such but it appears as if it acts as a catalyst speeding up the body's natural healing process, therefore reducing the time injuries take to heal.
