Rooting
out the Problem of Ragwort
When
it comes to eradicating Ragwort, one of the best ways is
is to physically remove every trace of it.
Ragwort
in grazing paddocks is lifethreatening to horses and other
livestock. The bitter taste discourages animals where possible;
but where grass is scarce or infestation is heavy, inevitably
some will be eaten and the cumulative damage to the animal's
liver is irreversible. When clinical signs of Ragwort poisoning
become apparent, such as loss of condition, depression and
ultimately loss of co-ordination in the animal - it is already
too late to save them.
To safeguard
your stock from Ragwort poisoning you must remove ragwort
from your paddocks. Dried or wilted Ragwort is no less toxic
and is more palatable; therefore winter forage must be Ragwort
free.
Control
of Ragwort requires a commitment of time or money. Conventional
spraying is unfriendly to the enviroment and can be expensive,
requiring a combination of costly equipment and trained
operatives. To spray at the optimum growth stage, you need
the correct weather conditions and all stock must be removed
until any trace of the plant have perished; this can take
months. A Rag Fork inexpensive and easy for anybody
to use at any time of the year, removing plants from the
immature rosette stage to fully flowering. With a Rag-Fork
the plant is fully removed, leaving no dangerous residue,
therefore animals don't need to be moved.
Ragwort
needs to be removed before the plant flowers and millions
of seed are blown on the pasture for future gemination.
