It is important to be safe while you are out riding. One
way to help you stay safe is to be as visible as possible

The British Horse Society is calling for more rights of
way to be opened up in the countryside. The equestrian
industry is losing over £100m a month and much of this

Primary and Secondary Lines
We use aids to teach things to horses. In teaching horses
to heed, we define an aid as a methodically applied directional
pressure used to create a shape. Aids need to be horse
logical. That means they must make sense to the horse
in terms of what his natural instincts tell him to do.

Riding
At Any Level is a Risky Pursuit
Riding at any level is a risky pursuit, so it is vital
to wear the right safety wear. Along with a correctly fitted
Helmet a Body Protector should be a priority. Body protectors
can reduce the severity of injuries, a well-fitted garment
can minimize rib fractures and help prevent bruising, together
with protecting the internal organs.

There's
a lot of talk about aids and cues in the horse world and
a lot of it just confuses people. One trainer talks about

Bitting
Youngstock
...If we have our horses from a young age, or buy one that
is not yet 'made' we have a tremendous advantage. Firstly,
I will never use,and do not like the expressions 'Broken'
or 'breaking' when referring to a young horse that has to
be prepared for the future. You 'break' cars when they are
written off or old, and if something is 'broken' it needs
to be fixed. I prefer to use the expression 'making' when
referring to a young horse.

Heeding Teaching Your Horse to Lunge
When you first start teaching a horse to heed, you use a
corridor of aids or pressures to create a feeling in the
horse of where you want him to move. As the horse's understanding
increases, the handler can not only change the direction
of the horse's strides but also their length, speed, and
cadence.

Mental Training
for Riders
Most riders know and appreciate the importance of physical
training. Everyday you go out and practice, develop skills,
and set goals. The very word training implies some sort
of preparation that is specific and focused. Not one of
you will debate the fact that you need to physically train
yourself and your horse in order to be better at your sport.
You also know that practice, commitment, and desire are
essential to this undertaking.

Dealing with Rearing
and Pulling
At some point in its training, something will startle
or frighten an energetic, red blooded baby horse and he
will rear or pull back or run sideways while the trainer
is leading him. Or he may jump around just because he's
young and he's feeling good. Or maybe he's challenging his
trainer like he would another horse in the herd just to
see who's who in the pecking order...

Teaching Your Horse to Back
When
you are trying to get a horse's attention, the first thing
you go for is his ears. Once an ear swivels in your direction,
you've got his attention. It may take a little longer before
he turns and faces you or before he walks up to you. But
those bigger movements start with that little tiny movement
of his ear.

Communication Starts With Grooming
